Dr. Edward de Bono (born 19 May 1933) is an author, inventor, consultant, physician and psychologist. His passion is the teaching of thinking in the field of education. De Bono is one of only a few people in history that has had a significant impact on the education and the way people think, act and express one’s feelings and views. In many ways “he could be said to be the best known thinker internationally” (Edwdebono.com, 2015). De Bono has been the author of numerous internationally acknowledged books with translations in thirty four languages. Due to his powerful contributions to education, de Bono has been invited to fifty two countries around the globe for academic lectures and workshops (Edwdebono.com, 2015). One of his famous books is known as the Six Thinking Hats which has been utilized by many countries in the developing National Curriculum documents for education. This book is based on his theory that there are multiple pathways of thinking and they are symbolized through six coloured hats.
The underlying philosophy of the Six Thinking Hats thinking approach is the acknowledgment that the human brain thinks in a number of distinctive ways. De Bono discovered that these different ways of thinking can be "identified, accessed, and planned for use in structured ways, enabling one to develop strategies for thinking about particular issues" (De Bono, 1992, p. 8). De Bono established that "helplessness arises" when we don't have a clear plan of action to take when confronted with a problem (Kivunja, 2015, p. 382). As a result De Bono (1992, p. 8) developed the Six Thinking Hats model; a "basic framework for thinking actions" in which "definite next steps can be taken to solve the problem."
This model is underpinned by "parallel thinking" in which all parties are thinking in the same direction and as a consequence promotes cooperative and coordinated thinking (Periodical.Co, 2015).

A quote to ponder:
“If you never change your mind, why have one?” Edward de Bono.
